Safari West's mission is to actively promote conservation and environmental education, equipping individuals with the knowledge to make informed choices about the environment and wildlife conservation. At Safari West, the focus has always been, and will always be, on the animals.
Safari West was founded in the late 1980s when Peter Lang purchased 400 acres in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. He relocated his growing collection of exotic wildlife to the former cattle ranch, transforming it into a world-class conservation breeding facility. Collaborating with local zoological facilities, including the San Francisco Zoo, Peter established captive breeding programs for various critically endangered species. During this time, he met Nancy Lang, a raptor specialist and lead curator at the zoo, who later became his wife. Together, they combined their skills to develop Safari West into the renowned wildlife preserve it is today.
